England vs India 2021-4th Test Match: Day 01

India batting 1st Innings (day 1)

England vs India 2021-4th Test Match is being played at The Oval, London, On day 1, England won the toss and asked India to bat first.

India had to face disappointment from the very beginning of the match and lost both K.L Rahul and Rohit Sharma one after another at the score of 28 in the 14th over.

Rohit Sharma was caught by wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow on a delivery bowled by Chris Woakes at a personal score of 11, India was 28/1 in 9 overs. Thereafter in 14th over K.L Rahul was LBW Robinson at 17, India was 28/2 in the 14th over.

After losing both openers in quick succession, Pujara too failed to stay longer and was caught by wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow on a delivery bowled by Anderson at a personal score of 4, India was 39/3 in the 20th over.

India was all out in the first innings at 191 in 61.3 overs. No batsman other than Virat Kohli and Shardul Thakur stayed on the crease for longer, Virat scored 50 whereas Shardul scored 57.

From the England side, Chris Woakes took 4 wickets, Ollie Robinson took 3 wickets, and Overton and Anderson took 1 wicket each.

England batting 1st Innings (day 1)

After the innings break, England openers Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed came out to bat. Jasprit Bumrah dismissed both the openers in one over and England was 6/2 after the 4th over. Burns scored 5 wheres Hameed went out on duck.

On day one stumps scores were: 

India in first innings 191 in 61.3 overs; England in first innings 50/2 in 12.3 overs

England batting 1st Innings (day 2)

On day 2 of the England vs India 2021-4th Test Match at The Oval, England continued batting in their first innings but lost Joe Roots and Craig Overton early on to Umesh Yadav at 21 and 1 respectively. England was 52/3 in the 16th over and 53/4 in the 19th over.

England lost David Malan in the 25th over to Umesh Yadav at 31, England was struggling at 62/5 in 25 overs. However, the sixth-wicket partnership between O. Pope and Bairstow gave some strength to England’s batting.

England once again lost a wicket in the form of Bairstow at 151/6 in 46.5 overs, Bairstow was LBW Mohhamed Siraj at 37. O. Pope continued batting with Moen Ali and got a half-century in the 50th over and England was 160/6.

Later, 50 runs partnership for the 7th wicket between O Pope and Moen Ali helped England reach 200/6 in the 63rd over.

At the tea break, England was 227/7 in 70 overs, just before the break England lost Moen Ali to Jadeja at 35. O. Pope was bowled out by Shardul Thakur at 81. After that, a half-century by Chris Woakes steered England to finish the first innings at 290 in 84 overs.

Fro the Indian side, Umesh Yadav picked 3 important wickets, and both Bumrah and Jadeja took 2 wickets. Shardul and Siraj got 1 wicket each.

India batting 2nd Innings (day 2)

At the stumps of day 2, in the 2nd innings, India was 43/0 in 16 overs.

On day two stumps scores were:

India in first innings 191 in 61.3 overs; England in first innings 290 in 84 overs; India in 2nd innings 43/0 in 16 overs; England Lead by 56 runs

India batting 2nd Innings (day 3)

On day 3 of the England vs India 2021-4th Test Match at The Oval, India continued batting in the second innings from where they left on day 2. The openers gave a foundation to the Indian innings by making 50 runs partnership for the first wicket. India was 79/0 in 29 overs at drinks.

Indian lost K.L Rahul in the 34th over to Anderson at a personal score of 46. India was 83/1 in 34 overs. Thereafter, Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara played magnificent cricket and made 150 runs partnership for the 2nd wicket.

India was cruising smartly but lost both Rohit and Pujara in the 81st over to Robinson and India was 237/3 after 81 overs.

Rohit Sharma scored 127 runs, this was his first overseas test century and he also completed 3000 test runs. Pujara managed to score 61 and this was his 31st test century.

After the dismissal of Rohit and Pujara, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja were batting at 22 and 9 respectively when the empires declared bad light and suspended the play for the day. India was 270/3 in 92 overs.

On day three stumps scores were:

India in 1st innings 191 in 61.3 overs; England first innings 290 in 84 overs; India in 2nd innings 270/3 in 92 overs; England trail by 171 runs

England vs India 2021-4th Test Match: Day 04

India batting 2nd Innings (day 4)

On day 4 of the 4th test match at The Oval, India continued batting in the second innings from where they left on day 3. Soon after the start, India lost Ravindra Jadeja and Ajinkya Rahane to Chris Woakes, both were out LBW. Jadeja scored 17 and Rahane was out on duck. India was 296/5 in 104th over.

Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant batted for around 5 overs together and India lost another wicket in the form of Kohli. He was out at 44 to Moin Ali’s first over and India was again in trouble with 312/6 in 111 overs.

Rishabh Pant and Shardul Thakur played good innings, both scored half-centuries, and made a valuable 100 runs partnership for the 7th wicket. Indian lost Shardul and Rishabh in succession.

England vs India 2021-4th Test Match

Shardul got out to Joe Root in 137th over after scoring a quick 60 runs and Rishabh gave his wicket to Moen Ali in 138th over at a personal score of 50. India was 414/8 in 137.3 overs.

The tail-enders, Umesh Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj collectively contributed 52 runs. India got all out at 466 in 148.2 overs with a lead of 367 runs over England.

From the England side, in the second innings, Chris Woakes got 3 wickets, Moeen and Robinson got 2 wickets each, and Roots and Anderson could manage 1 wicket each.

England batting in 2nd Innings (day 4)

England started solidly with both the openers, Rory Buns, and Haseeb Hameed. At the end of day 4, England managed not to lose any wicket early on and scored 77/0 in 32 overs.

On day four stumps scores were:

India in first innings 191 in 61.3 overs; England in first innings 290 in 84 overs; India 2nd innings 466/10 in 148.2 overs; England in 2nd Innings, 77/0 in 32 overs, need 291 runs to win on the 5th and last day. 

England vs India 2021-4th Test Match: Day 05

England batting in 2nd Innings (day 5)

On the fifth and the final day of the fourth test match at The Oval, England continued batting, both the openers scored 100 runs partnership for the 1st wicket. Burns scored a half-century and Hameed contributed 47.

England was 100/0 after 40.3 overs, unfortunately, lost Burns on the next delivery by Shardul and was 100/1 after 40.4 overs.

England Openers half century 4th test

After scoring 63 Hameed was bowled out by Jadeja in 54th over, England was 120/2 after 53.1 overs. David Malan (run-out Mayank/Rishabh) and Olie Pope (bowled Bumrah) got out cheaply, Malan scored just 5 and pope 2, England was struggling at 146/4 in 64.5 overs.

The biggest setback to England happened when Bairstow and Moeen Ali were dismissed on 0 (duck) by Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja in the 67th and 68th over respectively. So, from India’s point of view, these two overs were game-changers where England practically lost the grip on the match. England was 147/6 in 67.2 overs.

England still needed 143 runs to win the match in almost 55 over, seems like a difficult ask after losing 6 wickets at 147. Joe Root was the only hope for England. Root was dismissed at 36 by Shardul Thakur and England was 182/7 in 80.1 overs and the team was under pressure to at least Draw the match.

Umesh Yadav got rid of England’s tail by dismissing Woakes, Overton, and Robinson. They collectively scored 40 runs, as a result, England was all-out at 210 in 92.2 overs. India won the 4th test match against England by 157 runs. 

Jasprit Bumrah took 4 valuable wickets, 2 in both the inning,s, Umesh Yadav took 6, Shardul took 3, and Jadeja took 4 in the match.

Rohit Sharma was declared man of the match for his valuable 127 runs in 2nd innings. When interviewed, he said, “Very happy. Especially, when you are visiting any of these countries and you know that you are 2-1 up, you will take that any day,” he added, “It shows the effort that we have put so far in the series and this is not the end, we know there is one more match to go at Manchester,” 

“Hopefully, all of us, not just the batting and bowling unit, the entire group can put their foot down and just work towards the goal that we want to achieve as a team, I think we can pull this off. We have done some amazing things on this tour, I still believe we can finish on a high but of course, we need to do things in the manner we have done so far,” he said. 

On day five scores were:

  • India first innings 191 in 61.3 overs, England first innings 290 in 84 overs
  • India 2nd innings 466/10 in 148.2 overs. England 210/10 in 92.2 overs,  England lost the match by 157 runs. 

Indian vs England Test Series 2021 Till Now

In the test series of 5 matches, India now leads by 2/1, whereas 1 match was drawn. The last and fifth match will be played from 10th to 14th of September in Manchester.
