IND vs SA – Head to Head in Tests
The test record between the two teams is highly even-steven. Out of 39 matches played India has worn 14 whereas South Africa has registered a win 15 times and 10 matches have been drawn.
An interesting observation is that India has never won a Test series in South Africa. Since 1992 India played 7 series against SA in South Africa and lost 6 whereas 1 series was drawn in 2010-11.
When we talk about the highest run-getters for India against SA in South Africa then the top 5 are:
Player | Runs | Innings | Average | Highest |
---|---|---|---|---|
Sachin Tendulkar | 1161 Runs | 28 innings | 46.44 | 169 |
Rahul Dravid | 624 Runs | 22 innings | 29.71 | 148 |
VVS Laxman | 566 Runs | 18 innings | 40.42 | 96 |
Virat Kohli | 558 Runs | 10 innings | 55.80 | 153 |
Sourav Ganguly | 506 Runs | 16 innings | 36.14 | 73 |
As clearly visible Virat has the best average of 55 runs per innings and second highest of 153 after Sachin. Virat got these runs when India last played a Test match at Centurion during their 2017/2018 tour of the rainbow nation.
In addition to that Kohli’s highest Test score (254*) was scored against South Africa when both teams last met for a bilateral series as part of the ICC World Test Championship in 2019.
Therefore, it would not be wrong to say that Virat would hold the key to India’s performance in the coming test series against SA. And this would be India’s best chance to beat South Africa in their home.
